The Schuylkill River Trail is planned to run the entire length of the Schuylkill River, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Pottsville, about 140 miles, with a mix of paved and packed-gravel surfaces. Several sections are now complete, including a 22-mile paved stretch that runs from Philadelphia to Valley Forge (shown here). Check the web site (link above) for up-to-date information.

If the map has markers, click them for extra information. You can also double-click anywhere on the map to get driving directions to that point. Note:Trail routes shown are approximate! If you have a GPS trace of this trail, leave a comment below with your email address (which will not be published), and I'll contact you. Thanks!
Elevation profile of route: feet above sea level vs. distance traveled (approximate). Green marker on map above shows which end is designated as start of route.

Montgomery County now has a “second” Schuylkill River Trail. It runs from Riverfront Park in Pottstown to the Berks County Line, about 1-1/2 miles. There, the trail becomes a packed cinder trail and runs through Birdsboro to Reading (via some back roads).
Chester County says they’re planning to build a paved trail that will connect the two Montco trails. But I’ve been hearing that since 2004, so I’ll believe it when I see it.
As this trail slowly becomes completed, I don’t have a problem with unpaved sections if they are bicycle-friendly, like packed cinders. Gravel is not the best surface choice for a path intended for bikes.
